Brown and Blue bucket style hat. The hat is in a bucket style, also known as a fisherman's style hat. The brim of the hat is brown with visible backstitching in regular horizontal lines going around the circumference of the hat. The crown of the hat is blue in colour with 6 pairs of evenly spaced vertical backstitches connecting the fabric. Affixed to the front of the hat is an oval shaped embroidered patch. The patch is white with a thin blue stitched border. The words “Beavers Canada” adorn the patch in all capital blue letters, an embroidered beaver shown in side profile crouched on its hind legs sits between the two words. The inside of the crown of the cap is lined with 3 intersecting ribbons of white silky material and a thicker band of the same material surrounds the circumference of the hat where the crown meets the brim. Two tags are affixed to the intersection between the crown and brim on the opposite side of the hat to the beaver patch. Both tags are rectangular in shape and white in colour. The first reads "100% Cotton Krystal Cap Co. LTD 16 Plymouth Ave. Toronto, Canada.” The second reads “Canada Medium," above the size indication is the emblem for the United Hatters, Cap and Millinery Workers International Union, a globe with a pair of shaking hands below.
The “Beavers Canada” logo refers to the Beavers program run by Scouts Canada, a program for ages 5-7 which helps young people develop skills both physically and intellectually by participating in various activities promoting community involvement and engaging with nature. A Scouts uniform is an important element of the Scout identity, indicating progression throughout the program. Each section of Scouts (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturer Scouts, Rover Scouts) has a distinctive colour scheme which they follow. A full Beavers uniform would consist of a hat, a necktie, a woggle (ring to secure necktie), and a vest. The blue and brown colour scheme was adopted in 1974.
The Scouting movement was founded in England in 1907 by Robert Baden-Powell, then a lieutenant-general in the British army. It quickly expanded into Canada in 1908, with troops established in Nova Scotia and Ontario. The demand for programming for younger children led to the development of the Beavers program throughout the 1960s. The first Beaver colony in Canada started in Winnipeg in 1971, with the organization being absorbed into Scouts Canada in 1974. As of 2025 Scouts Canada offers a variety of programming for children and youth aged 5-26, with over 40000 participants across the country.
