Description
Picture block joined using the tongue and groove technique, which is evident on the top side. Front: Rectangle block stained red, the colour concentrated on the raised pieces of wood, with 5 sections cut out. The first is a 9.4cm (long) by 2.7cm (tall) rectangle 2.2cm above the first selection, and it is on a diagonal with the right side pointing down to the right. The third section that is cut out is a 2.2cm (wide) and 4.6cm (long) rectangle 3.8cm above the left of the first missing section. It is angled down to the left. About 17.5cm above this is the fourth section as a 2.4cm (tall) by 4.3cm (long) rectangle. About 16.6cm to the right is the final cut out section as a 2.5cm (tall) by 7.9cm (long) rectangle. The image that the relief/raised wood is outlining is that of a lion's head and mane. 2.8cm above the left side of the first missing rectangle there are 2 wavy parallel relief lines 5.6cm long. Above and to the right is a relief carving of the lion's open mouth 6.2cm tall and about 7.2cm long. Framing the lion's open mouth is 6.2cm tall and about 7.2cm long. Framing the lion's recessed face is a carved relief mane which breaks in the top left and right corners for the non-existent ears. The mane is jagged, Back: There is a strip of paper glued to the top of the block between the 2 top cut out pieces. Below it is a strip of masking tape with "DAG 298" written on it in red ink. Below that "No. 231" is stamped in purple ink. There are 2 incisions at each corner of the bottom cut out rectangle.
