Block, Wood

Artifact

Accession Number:
2015.1.134b
Description
The T&G technique used to join the wood to make this rectangular shape is evident on the top and bottom sides. Front: Stained yellow with the colour concentrated on the relief sections of wood and a more greenish colour on the recessed sections. The design that the relief wood creates is that of the roaring face of a lion and a jagged border around the block, except for the bottom side, that frames what would be his mane. The head is 21.6 cm wide and 23.1 cm tall. His open mouth is 8.5 cm tall and 9.0 cm wide at the widest sections. 1.2 cm above the top of his mouth is a 2.8 cm long curve that resembles the tip of his nose. There are tiny slits that represent his eyes. The relief jagged border that frames the mane begins from the bottom left and right corners. The left side angles up for 17.0 cm before beginning to frame the lion's mane. Back: There is a horizontal strip of paper glued across the top of the block. There is also a strip of masking tape along the right side with "DAG 298" written on it in red ink.
