Description
Picture Block*** possibly a tongue and groove wood block. This block is part of a 3 part set with 2015.1.142a (blue) and 2015.1.142c (yellow). Front: Stained red. Block is mostly recessed leaving relief wood as detailing, mostly in the bottom half of the block. In the top right corner is the relief design of the band woman's hat, occupying a space of 12.5cm wide by 10.5cm long, beginning 1.0cm down from the top edge and connecting with the right edge. 7.5cm below the brim of her hat is a relief triangle representing the mouthpiece of her bugle (not pictured on this block). 5.5cm below the mouth piece, begins the detail for her military style band jacket. This jacket design, which is in relief wood, occupies a space of approximately 27cm wide by 22.5cm long (at the widest and longest points). Within the jacket design are several recessed wood parts. First to distinguish the collar, then there is a line down the torso with 4 toggle clasps (following the yellow block design). There is recessed wood on both of the shoulders for her shoulder tassels. Below her elbow is a relief design depicting part of a tent, approximately 12.5cm wide by 8.5cm long. In the bottom left corner is partial definition of a clown's face approximately 9.5cm wide by 12.5cm long. Both the clown and the woman are in the foreground (hard to tell on this block). Between the left edge and the woman's forearm, just above the clown's head, is the relief design of more circus tents and buildings, 23.5cm wide by 10cm long. Above these tents, attached to the left edge is the final detail, a relief design for a ferris wheel, 12cm long by 5cm wide. Ferris wheel design looks like dotted lines. The remainder of the block is recessed, using a circular headed tool. Stain is concentrated to the relief wood. Sides: residual red stain near the front of the block. Black marks can be seen in the wood grain. Back: "Top" is handwritten in pencil in the top center. "No. 406" is stamped in purple in the center. "Red" is handwritten below the "no 406" in pencil. Fingerprints are visible around the edges, most likely the artists. Black marks visible in the wood grain, especially down the left side.
