Description

*Picture Block* Tongue and groove rectangular block stained black. Front: block has outer edges in relief wood with an irregular shaped recessed area in the center. 22.8cm above the bottom edge is the only part of the block with any detailing. Carved into the relief wood on the left side is what appears to be a 2 story building with 2 flags on top occupying 5.5cm wide by 7cm long section. Running underneath this design and across the recessed shape to the right edge is a straight relief line 0.9cm long by 28cm wide. Above this line on the right side is the second design in the relief wood of a building with a flag and an awning/tent attached, occupying an 8.5cm wide by 3.8cm long space. The recessed area is a large shape occupying almost 29cm wide by 48.2cm long. However this shape has many curves which make it not a rectangle. The bottom has 2 curves with the apex rising 4.7cm from the bottom edge at approximately 18.5cm from the left edge. The left side also has 2 curves with the apex coming 4.6cm from the left edge (depth of the curve) at approximately 21.5cm from the top edge. The top edge is one large curve; beginning 7cm from the top edge and 2.5cm from the left edge, this large curve, curves up to 0.7cm from the top edge before curving down towards the right side. The right side has 3 curves to it: 1) is approximately 15cm long before curving in 3cm from the right edge and 24.5cm from the top edge. 2) is only about 9cm long before curving in 4.5cm from the right edge and 37cm from the top edge. The final curve is about 10cm long before joinging the bottom curve. Inside this area has been recessed with a circular headed tool. The remaining area is relief wood. Stain is concentrated on the outer relief wood. Sides: plain wood with residual stain on areas close to the front of the block. Black marks are visible within the wood grain. Back: back is covered in strips of paper that have been glued on. "No 53" is written upside down near the bottom center. More residual stain concentrated around the edges.
