Description
*Picture Block* Part 1 of a three block (blue, red, yellow) series. Rectangualar tongue and groove joined wood block. Front: stained blue and is mostly recessed. 12cm above the bottom edge beegins on large connected relief sections made of 4 components: 1) 48.1cm wide by 1.1cm long rectangle serving as relief bottom edge. 2) Running up the left edge is the design of a clown bending forward at the waist with his arms extended behind him. Design covers a total area (largest measurments) of 17.3cm wide by 40.3cm long. This clown's pants and har are in relief with the recessed areas marking his shoes, pant pockets on the right knee, torso and most of his face. 3) To the right of the clown is a large base drum design, the bottom left section is partially covered by the clown, measuring 30cm in diameter with a small triangle (curved) in the top left detailing the side of the base drum. The left clown appears to be holding this drum behind his back. 4) Extending up from the bottom relief line up the right side of the block, is a second clown covering a total area of 24cm by 50cm tall. Part of this clown is blocked, mostly in the torso by the base drum he is holding in front of him. The outline and mallet that the clown is holding are done in relief--the rest is recessed. Remainder of the block has been recessed with a circular tool. Blue stain is concentrated on and around the relief section of the block. Sides: ink stains in the wood grain and near the front edges of relief wood. Back: "No. 86" is stamped in the top left corner. Ink stains in the wood grain. Ink smudges visible around the outer edges.
