Description
*Picture Block* Rectangular tongue and groove joined wood block. Front: stained dark blue and is mostly recessed using a circular headed tool. Relief wood is used to create images. The top and bottom of the block are edged with a 2cm section (border) created with 2 relief lines (0.7cm each) with a linear groove separating the 2 lines. 2.5cm below the top border is a relief outlined shield shape. Covering an area 43.2cm wide by 37.7cm long, shield begins as a straight horizontal line at the top, then curves in 1.5cm and heads down for about 32cm and curves towards the middle where it goes straight across and meets in a point 1cm down. Written inside the shield is the word "Blue" in pencil. 0.5cm above the bottom border begins two right triangle-like shapes representing turf (baseball diamond). The first meet the left edge and goes up for about 6cm and across the block for about 33.5cm. Diagonal downwards line goes for 33.8cm. The second triangle goes 3.5cm up the right edge, 14.7cm across the bottom where it joins the first triangle and the diagonal goes down for about 15cm. Carved above where the 2 triangles meet is the design of a baseball player (post swing) dropping his bat to run to first base, with a back catcher and umpire behind him. The entire design is approximately 26cm wide by 19.8cm long. Numerous recessed marks to mark the turf. In the bottom left corner of the first triangle is a drilled hole 1cm in diameter going through the entire block. Stain is concentrated on and around the relief areas. Sides: Plain wood with residual blue ink stains nearest front relief areas as well as in the wood grains. Top edge has "76" carved into the right corner as well as "#76 black" written in pencil near the center of the top edge. Back: Residual ink stains/smudges all over the back of the block as well as in the wood grain. Note: The title assigned to this piece is drawn from the Dunlop Art Gallery's Exhibition Catalogue "The Big Show", published in the late 1980s, which features a poster advertising "Happytime Sports Day", and was created from a print of this block. It is otherwise untitled.
