Description
*Picture and Text Block* Square wood block with tongue and groove joints that are evident on the bottom side. Back: There are 6 horizontal and 2 vertical strips of paper glued to the back. There is a strip of masking tape near the top right corner with "DAG 278" written on it in red marker. There is a small square of tape in the top left corner with "19" written on it in red ink. There are 2 screws drilled into the top of the board with a metal cord strung in between them so that the board can be hung on a wall. Sides: There is a strip of whiteout on the bottom side (directly on the wood) with the previous temporary number written on it. There are evenly spaced indents all along the edge of the bottom side. There are black ink marks in the wood grain on all sides of the block. There are 2 horizontal parallel grooves that go across the top side on the left. Front: Stained yellow. The surface is both recessed and raised in certain areas. *NOTE* This block is the 3Rd block in a 3 part series so the images made by this block are incomplete and difficult to identify. Along the top left is half of 2 words outlined by relief wood which simply fills in the negative space. The top right corner is recessed wood where the first half of the words should be. In the final printed poster, the words across the top would say "WALLACE BROS SHOWS". On this block we only see "CE" "BROS." on top and "HOWS" below them. The letters are recessed into the relief wood in a curve. They are smaller nearer to the middle, and they grow bigger the closer to the edge they are. For example the "S" in "BROS" is 10.5cm tall, and the "E" in what would be "WALLACE" in only 5cm tall. The opposite of this is true for the word below, "SHOWS". The letters are bigger in the middle, and only slightly smaller at the ends. For example, the "O" is 8.1cm tall, where the "S" (at the end of "SHOWS") is 6.4 cm tall. The relief wood that the words are recessed into goes down across the block for 48.9cm from 16.3cm down the left edge where it begins. The end point is 22.3cm from the top edge. Below this is what would be an elaborate scene of a fair. However, since this block only fills in the same designs and negative space this scene is not clear. Please reference 2015.1.183a for the picture and more detailing. Much of the bottom half of this block is recessed. Starting from the left side are 2 tower-like shapes made from relief. The left one resembles a ladder, and has a pointed top. It is 2.7cm from the left edge, 3.2cm wide and 15.3cm tall. Beside it, 0.3cm to the right, is a 1.5cm wide by 15.6cm tall tower with a 3.5cm wide circle on the top. Below is a carousel 13.5cm wide by 12.6cm long. The relief wood fills in the top of the tent as well as designs around the border of it. About 2.6cm from the left edge there is a relief section approximately 4.6cm tall (bumpy top edge) that runs along the bottom edge to the right edge. 1.5cm up from this section, 19.1cm from the left edge, are 7 relief diamond shapes in a vertical line 11.4cm long. These fill in the middle of what should be the main support beam of the ferris wheel. To the right are 5 various shapes that create a horizontal line 17.4cm across and roughly 2.5cm tall (wavy). Above these 2 lines is a recessed section that is carved into a point by 2 relief sections approximately 17.3cm long each on either side. A small section of a ferris wheel is recessed into the relief side. There are 8 shapes of various sizes and designs in the bottom right corner that are done in relief. See picture for more detail on the bottom right corner.
