Description
*Picture Block* Almost a square wood block with a zinc plate nailed to the front surface. Front: Stained wood. The zinc creates outlines of the images. The image is that of a woman's face overlooking a fair scene. Along with her hat and her hair, her face measures 17.8cm wide by 17.3cm long(tall). The zinc only outlines her eyes and the corners of her lips. Her chin is resting on a curved line that borders the fair scene below her along the bottom edge. In the middle it is 14.8cm from the bottom edge. There is a 1.5cm tall crowd that begins on the left edge, and continues along the bottom edge for 22.5cm. The first ride, moving left to right, is a spinning ride where 2 beams with a passenger car on each end swing around a base beam. The base beam is 5cm tall; from car to car it measures 12.5cm. To the right is an 11.5cm tall spinning ride with a flag on top. There are 9 cars that get swung around in a circle, each connected to a pole which is hanging from the top of the base beam. To the right is a 6.5cm wide by 6.2cm long tent with a flag on top. To the right is the left half of a carousel. It measures 9.5cm wide by 9cm long. Above is a 7.4cm wide by 9cm long ferris wheel. The bottom half is cut off by the carousel. Back: Strip of masking tape along the top right corner with "DAG 357" written on it in red marker. NOTE*** The title assigned to this piece comes from the Dunlop Art Gallery's Exhibition Catalogue "The Big Show", published in the late 1980s, which features posters produced by this block, identifying it as "Midway/Girl". This title was also used by EAGM in a fundraiser in 2001, when re-produced prints from this block were available for sale. Otherwise this block is untitled.
