It is a rectangular block of wood with a hand carved relief of the letter "E" (movable typeface). The original coat of varnish is evident and the pigment has naturally darkened with age/use. The relief is auburn, black and dark brown. The carved down portion is dark brown/burgundy and the carving marks/dents are evident. The back is almost entirely covered in dark brown, red and black pigment. Materials
