It is a square block of wood with a hand carved relief of the letter "S" (movable typeface). The relief surface is glossy/smooth as the original coat of varnish is still evident and the pigment has naturally darkened with age and use. The relief is dark burgundy and black. The carved down portion is a matte red and black and the carving marks are evident. The back is discoloured and the pigment has naturally darkened. The surface is entirely covered with black, dark brown and red pigment. Materials
