Karel Appel (b. 1921 Amsterdam, Netherlands, d. 2006 Zurich, Switzerland) was a Dutch painter, printmaker, sculptor, and designer. His works often consist of boldly coloured abstract human figures embodying a wide range of stylistic qualities throughout his career. He attended the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam from 1940-1943, later becoming a key part in the CoBrA art movement from 1948-1951. Appel’s works have been showcased internationally including the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Hamilton ON (1977); Edmonton Art Gallery, Edmonton AB (1972); Martha Jackson Gallery, New York NY (1950-1957, 1960, 1963, 1964, 1973); Galerie Max Hetzler, London UK (2018, 2019); The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York NY (1968); and the Guggenheim Museum, New York NY (1953, 1957, 1959, 1963, 1964, 1998, 2006, 2009, 2012).
