Ernest W. Smith was born in Saskatoon in 1914. He attended Nutana Collegiate Institute from 1928 to 1932. He studied English and History at the University of Saskatchewan, and did some work towards his PhD. As an artist, he was mainly self-taught. After he left school, he was a teacher for a short time. He met with Ernest Lindner's Saturday Night Group of Painters.
