Axangayuk Shaa (b.1937 Cape Dorset NU, d. 2019) was an Inuit carver known for his expressive and dynamic pieces, often depicting people and animals. Shaa was the son of artists Munamee Shaa and Kilabuk Shaa. At the age of seventeen, he began learning how to carve from Canadian artist James Houston. His sculptures and prints have been exhibited throughout Canada and internationally including Queen’s Museum, Flushing NY (1974); Winnipeg Art Gallery, Winnipeg MB (1975, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2011); Norman Mackenzie Art Gallery, Regina SK (1981); Canadian Arctic Gallery, Basel Switzerland (2004, 2009, 2010); and The Arctic Circle, Los Angeles California (1974, 1982, 1984).
