Makusi Pangutu Anauta

Makusi Pangutu Anauta (Anautak) (b.1939 Kikitayuak) is an Inuit carver who primarily creates steatite stone and soapstone sculptures. He began his carving career in 1955 depicting Inuit traditions, ceremonies, stories, and significant animals to the Inuit culture. Throughout his career, Anauta has developed two distinct stylistic qualities within his work. One being softer, rounded human figures; the other including sharp angular linework enveloped within the subject. Anuata’s sculptures are held within collections throughout Canada including the Art Gallery of York University, The Canadian Museum of History, Glenbow Museum, Winnipeg Art Gallery, and the Avataq Cultural Institute.
