Irene Kataq Angutitok

Irene Kataq Angutitok (b. 1914 Bathurst Inlet NU, d.1971 Naujaat NU) was an Inuit sculptor based in Nunavut. Many of her sculptures are inspired by feminine figures and biblical stories which are carved from whale bone, ivory, and soapstone. Angutitok’s sculptures have been exhibited throughout Canada and internationally including the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Winnipeg MB (1967, 1973, 1978,1980, 1987); Norman Mackenzie Gallery, Regina SK (1981); McClelland & Stewart, Toronto ON (1965, 1999); and the Studio Art Gallery of State University of New York, Binghamton NY (1984). Her work is also within the collections of the Canadian Museum of History, Winnipeg Art Gallery, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
