Kiugak (Kiawak) Ashoona (b.1933 Baffin Island NU, d. 2014) was an Inuit sculptor and printmaker who is primarily known for his figurative works carved from stone. Ashoona began carving at the age of fourteen learning from his family. His works have been exhibited within Canada and internationally including the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto ON (1983-1985, 2011); National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa ON (1984, 1992, 2005); Canadian Arctic Gallery, Basel Switzerland (2000, 2009); and Arctic Artistry, Hartsdale NY (1985, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1992). Ashoona’s sculptures are also held within the collections of the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, Montreal QC; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York NY; Museum of Modern Art, New York NY; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa ON; and the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto ON. Notably, in 1980 his work ‘Sea Goddess’ was selected to be on a Canadian stamp.
