Dorothy Knowles (b. 1927 Unity, SK, d. 2023 Saskatoon, SK) was a Saskatoon based painter who explored the vast terrain of Saskatchewan landscapes embodied in her distinct painting style throughout her seventy-year career. Knowles attended the University of Saskatchewan receiving a Bachelor of Arts in 1948 with initial plans to pursue a career as a biology lab technician. However, following her degree Knowles’ artistic talent was recognized upon attending summer classes at Emma Lake and Banff National Park. She continued her art studies during the subsequent summers later meeting her husband and fellow artist, William Perehudoff. In 1952, Knowles would transition her career to become a full-time artist. Notably, she was awarded the Saskatchewan Order of Merit (1987), an Honourary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Saskatchewan (1994), and was a recipient as a Member of the Order of Canada (2004). Her pieces have been exhibited locally and internationally including the Meredith Long Contemporary, New York NY (1975, 1978, 1979); Douglas Udell Gallery, Edmonton AB (1992, 1994, 1996, 2000-2011, 2014); Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon SK (1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1972, 1980, 1982, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1994, 1995, 2003, 2005, 2009, 2012, 2014); Art Gallery of Alberts, Edmonton AB (2017); Portland Art Museum, Portland OR (2002); Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Halifax NS (2009); and the Remai Modern, Saskatoon SK (2018).
