Stanley Cosgrove

Stanley Cosgrove (RCA) was a Canadian painter, draughtsperson and muralist. He was born in Montreal in 1911 and is known for his portrait, landscape, and still life paintings. From 1927 to 1931, painter Stanley Cosgrove attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Montreal, before going on to study under the renowned artist Edwin Holgate. In 1940 he went to the Academia Nacional de San Carlos in Mexico where he studied fresco murals under Jose Clemente Orozco. He later returned to Montreal and taught at the Ecole des Beaux Arts for many years. Cosgrove retired from teaching in 1985 to devote himself to painting. His works centred on the human figure, still life and landscape. His pieces are found in the collections of the Art Gallery of Ontario, University of Toronto; the Vancouver Art Gallery, and the National Gallery of Canada and many other public and private collections.
