The Campus Art Placement Program provides artwork from the University Art Collection that is displayed in many publicly accessible spaces throughout campus. Our libraries, having large and fairly open areas, provide the added advantage of exhibiting artwork that is stylistically, thematically or conceptually linked in a manner and with a purpose that is similar to the display of art objects exhibited in galleries. In consultation with the Library staff, artworks were selected that reflect themes or concepts that may be of interest to the students and staff in the Colleges where those libraries reside.
The current Natural Sciences Library placement, located in the Geology Building, consists of artwork that has the overarching theme of Nature. While an obvious association, the role of Nature in Art is significant in that Art is a visual medium, based primarily on the artist's observation of the natural world in all its forms, and comprehended, manipulated and transformed into a meaningful visual expression that can reflect the nature of humanity. With this in mind, the collection of 39 works by 11 different artists illustrate many of the diverse ways in which artists creatively engage with the natural world.
