Saari Chair and Saari Chair Write Up- This chair contains no nails. It was constructed by an early Finnish settler, Johannes Ylisaari (John Saari) either at this homstead or brought with him from his homeland in Yaasa, Finland. It is held together entirely by wooden pegs, possibly because nails were not available or too expensive. The chair was used in the 14' x 16' house Mr. Saari built on his homestead in 1892 at NW36-17-1-W2 in the New Finland District Northeast of Whitewood. Mr. Saari died here in 1914. He was the maternal grandfather of Mrs. Evelyn Vennard of Whitewood. The family passed the chair on to the Whitewood Trading Company, who we thank for the opportunity to display this wonderful example of early ingenuity.
