The Grounding Alcove is a cultural space located in the hallway outside of the Surgical Skills Lab at the University of Saskatchewan. Designed to serve students, staff, and faculty, this area provides a place for spiritual reflection and to offer respect on the use of donor cadavers for surgical skills training.
The space features a mural symbolizing the circle of life, honouring creation and the ever-changing nature of our world. The background includes the Seven Sacred Teachings—also known as the Grandfather or Grandmother teachings. The project was created in collaboration with the Indigenous Initiatives and Programming of the College of Medicine. It was led by Dr. Ivar Mendez, who served as the head of the Department of Surgery from 2013 until 2022, and Candace Wasacase-Lafferty, who was the Senior Director of the Gordon Oakes Red Bear Student Center until 2023. ~root~>
