Description

A mink fur muff. There is a light brown fur on the outside and a thick white pillow-like-cushion on the inside. The cushion is held in by a dark brown thin cotton fabric and thick thread.
Previously belonged to donator's mother in law.

The muff is usually described as a cylindrical covering of fur, fabric, feathers, or other soft material, with open ends into which the hands are placed to keep them warm. Originally a purse and hand warmer in one, the muff was first introduced to women's fashion in 1570, when fur trimming was becoming popular. Later on in the 17th century they were used for both men and women. If the men were extremely fashionable they would have a large fur muff. In the 19th century they became essential for women's fashion. By then they had came out with fur muffs, velvet muffs, and any other material to match the women's dress. The bigger the muff the more fashionable.

This muff would have been from around the 18th century due to the fact it is fur and the style of sewing.
