The painting depicts a man grabbing water from the melting ice of a slough. Sapp is showing the challenge of how his family collected water, made more difficult during the times of winter weather. This is perhaps accentuated by the presence of a broken barrel present in the slough. Despite these hardships, it was a necessity for the survival of the Indigenous people and their animals. ~root~>
