It is a square block of wood with a hand carved relief of the letter "S" (movable typeface). The relief is glossy/smooth as the original coat of varnish is still evident. The pigment has naturally darkened with age and use. The relief is a combination of black and burgundy. The carved down portion is dark brown and red and the carving marks/dents are evident. The back is discoloured and marked with brown, red and black pigment. Two remnants of ripped off glued paper.
