It is a rectangular (almost square) block of wood with a carved relief of the number "8" (movable typeface). The relief surface is glossy/smooth as the original coat of varnish is still evident and it is orange with patched of red and lines/scratches. The carved down portion is a matte dark red. The back is covered in black, red and brown pigment that has naturally darkened with time and use. The old accession number is also written on the back in faded permanent marker. ~root~>
