It is a rectangular block of wood with a carved relief of the letter "W" or "M" (movable typeface). The original coat of varnish is still evident and the pigment has naturally darkened with time and use. The pattern of the wood grain is still evident in areas. The surface is dark auburn/Burgundy and the carved down portion is is a matte rust colour. Carving marks/dents are also evident on the carved down portion. The back is varnished and the varnish has yellowed with age and dirt. It is marked with red and black pigment. The old accession number is also written in permanent marker on the bottom edge.
