According to back of a photo, "This article is called a Maiza, a Russian word. It was brought to Canada from Russia by the late Mr & Mrs Jacob D Petkau in 1913. It was used there for powdering spices, salt, sugar, etc. which were put into it and crushed with a heavy mallet. It was made c.1830."
