Stone Axe
Artifact
1995.24.1
Full grooved stone axe head. One side of the groove is triangular, while the other is rectangular with a sharpened edge. A wooden handle would be attached to the stone at the groove and would then be used to chop wood or other materials with the sharp edge. This stone axe, in particular, is much thinner and smoother compared to some.
In general, the full grooved axe was the first axe type developed by the Indigenous peoples of North America, and were just one of several ground stone tools. Axes with full grooves were produced during the Early Period, 9,000-8,000 years before present (BP). Most ground stone tools are often made of coarse grained rocks, like granite or basalt.~root~>
