Red Rock Core

Red Rock Core

Artifact

1996.x.90
Red rock core with a smooth bottom and an uneven top. One part is broken clean in a triangular shape. Cores are considered the "parent" rock used to create stone tools. The uneven texture is the result from the stone being worked at in order to break off flakes, which then later are constructed into the desirable tool. This core, in particular, appears to have been exhausted with flakes removed from both sides, one of which was quite large and resulted in the relatively smooth bottom.
