Quartzite Flake
Artifact
1996.x.119
Feldspathic siltstone or maroon quartzite rock. The top is flat, while the bottom looks chipped around the edges, and has small indentations as if something sharp had struck it.
This is likely a large flake, which are the result of striking another rock referred to as a core in order to break off pieces. These broken off flakes are then used to create tools. It looks like this flake was possibly being worked into some sort of point or scraper given its shape, but was not quite finished.~root~>
