Red Rock Core

Red Rock Core

Artifact

1996.x.120
Red rock with a smooth rounded bottom, while the top resembles an uneven, broken core. Cores are considered the "parent" rock used to create stone tools. The uneven texture is the result from the stone being worked at in order to break off flakes, which then later are constructed into the desirable tool. The smooth bottom provides insight into what the rock looked like in its original state before being chipped away at. The smooth side also contains small semi-circular shaped marks, likely from the rock being struck multiple times.
