Artifact

2015.1.37
Front: Red/orange stained rectangular block. The block has a raised edge measuring 1.2cm wide and surround all four sides of the face. Next to the edge on the inside are 4 linear grooves that emphasize the raised edge. Stain is more concentrated along the raised edges and varies in concentration within the scraped center portion. Inside the grooves is an area that has to be chiseled/shaved down with the circular head tool. Back: On the back of the block are two strips at either side of paper with a partial piece of paper in the top center portion. Revealed beneath the middle paper is a partially written name. At the bottom in the center is a pencilled plus sign (+). Along the bottom edge is an upside down 'T' written in pencil.
Wood (basswood or pine)
Length: 22.1 cm; Width: 16.6 cm; Height: 2.3 cm;
Notes: Numbers listed are the maximum measurements in each category. The height measurement refers to the thickness of the wood block. The length refers to how tall it is.

Writing in pencil on the back in the center, most likely a name, but is not clearly visible due to paper strips on the back. Also at the bottom center is a pencil mark that looks like a plus sign. On the bottom edge there is an upside down "T".
