Artefact

1930
Sunbonnet made from printed cotton and strips of cardboard. The bonnet resembles a hood and has an inside top part to keep it from falling on the face. According to a letter from the donor: "The sunbonnet was Mrs. Harriet Newell who was a pioneer coming from western Ontario near London with her husband Cyrus Newell setting at Swift Current on 14 August 1906. My mother made the sunbonnet in the dirty thirties. It was quite thrifty as you took out the cardboard when you wanted to wash it and then put it back. At one time sunbonnets were stiffly starched thus saving starch [by using cardboard]."
