78.1.346
1950 – 1989
Black "soapstone" carving of bird that looks like a loon. Stone is black with green areas and polished. Long neck with pointed beak. Two white circles with white ring around them for eyes on either side of head. Two lines carved angled downwards on front of face at top of beak. Disk number insribed on bottom.

Based on the disk number on the base (E-9.1720), this artwork is attributed to Annie Niviaxie. The artist is known for sculpting the female motif and focusing on the theme of mother and child. Therefore, this carving is outside her typical work. In the 1980s the artist produced more simplistic pieces for financial reasons. This piece may be from that time period, but could have been produced anywhere from the 1950s-1980s.
