It is a rectangular block of wood with a hand carved relief of the letter "E" (movable typeface). The original coat of varnish is till evident and the pigment has naturally darkened with age/use. The relief is black and dark burgundy. The carved down portion is matte dark red and carving marks/dents evident. The back is almost entirely covered in brown, dark blue and black pigment.
