Artefact

2015.1.81
large rectangular wood block measuring 2.2 cm thick by 65.5 cm wide and 101.5 cm long. Front: stained red, with one main raised relief design, sort of in the shape of a sideways U but with uneven widths (part of the top line has been removed for another block). Bottom left width measures 30.3 cm from the bottom left corner up, top right width (from the corner down) meaures 15 cm. These two widths from the top of the U. Seperating the two widths is recessed semi-circle, which cuts in from the left for 49.7 cm at the maximum length. The bottom of the "U" meets at the right edge 20.5 cm from the top and 38cm from the bottom. The top edge runs fro 80.5 cm before curving to meet the right edge and the bottom edge runs for 34cm before curving up to the right edge. Surrounding the relief design are 3 recessed areas with less red stain and have been carved with a circular headed tool. Sides: residual red stain and each side varies in thickness due to the raised design. Back: Solid plain wood but has residual red stain and fingerprints around the outside edges but also has 6 dark red stains; one in the upper left corner, one in the lower left corner, two long parallel lines towards the bottom right and two longer lines , almost like a "T" in the center. In the upper middle are 3 sets of numbers "2/3" then "8/2d" below the first and "3/3" below the second. There are also black marks (ink) that outline the back of the raised design on the front.
Wood (Basswood or pine)
Longueur: 101.5 cm; Largeur: 65.5 cm; Hauteur: 2.2 cm;
Notes: Numbers listed are the maximum measurements in each category. The height measurement refers to the thickness of the wood block with the raised wood design. The length is the longest measurement of the three. It measures the distance across the surface of the block from side to side.

"2/3", "8/2d" and "3/3" on center of the back.
